A Meeting of Minds and Hearts

On an invigorating day in July 2015, a spark of hope was ignited for the whiskered residents of the Benoni Bunny Park. A team of dedicated minds, from various walks of life, congregated under the winter sun with a unified purpose – to enhance the well-being of the bunnies that hop through the park. This gathering was not your ordinary meeting; it was a collaboration that would pave the path to a better tomorrow for the floppy-eared inhabitants.

A Coalition for Compassion

The cast of compassionate characters included the astute Jacque Meiring, the Regional Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance (DA), accompanied by Gerrie Kriek, the valiant Ward 27 DA Councillor. Their mission closely aligned with the Bunny Park Volunteer Group and Bunny Park Rescue, who together formed a coalition dedicated to the immediate welfare of our furry friends.

Hopping Towards Healing

Their collective efforts were met with approval, as they received a green light to begin the rescue of the park’s injured and infirm rabbits. Invaluable assistance came from the kind-hearted Samantha Berger, along with Kitty and Puppy Haven. Their knowledge and helping hands were instrumental in undertaking this momentous endeavor.

Spreading the Word and Wielding the Wand

The weekend that followed was a buzz of activity, teeming with passion and purpose. On the morning of Saturday, 25th of July, Gerrie Kriek and Jacques Meiring from the DA, along with an ensemble of volunteers, were present at the park from 08:00. They engaged with the public, sensitizing them about the situation, and working together for the animals’ cause.

A Community of Care

As the park’s contours take shape, Dries Venter, Deputy Head of Parks and Recreation, makes an earnest appeal: “We’re building with blocks of generosity,” he declares. With a heartwarming nod to the ‘Spirit of Community,’ the department seeks contributions – from cement to wire mesh – in realizing this collective dream. Generous benefactors can anticipate recognition for their contributions, as their names will be etched in the very spaces they helped to enhance.

The Dawn of Discovery Awaits

As dawn broke on Sunday, the 26th of July, the spirit of volunteerism was in full swing. Equipped with black bags, plastic bags, and rubber gloves, the Bunny Park Volunteer group met at 10:00 am to continue with the cleanup project. Their acts of kindness were nothing short of phenomenal, and their dedication unwavering. This was a community that truly embodied the essence of turning compassion into action.

Standing Ovation to Our Volunteers

Team BAT observes with pride and extends a heartwarming salute to the Bunny Park Volunteer group. For they are not just talkers but doers who lead by example. Their efforts are a rocking testament to what can be achieved when kindness is put into motion.

The Journey Continues

Looking ahead, Team BAT will convene with the Head of Department for Parks to discuss further plans. This is only the beginning of a journey that promises enhanced care and a nurturing environment for the park’s residents.

Stay tuned, and watch this space, dear friends. Together, with tenacity and teamwork, we can indeed make a difference.
